I have been working on a documentary film which focuses on four Jamaican contemporary artists who use photography as their chosen medium. A few days ago, my DP, Sean, and I went along to a shoot with one of the group, Marlon James. Marlon has been photographing transvestites and cross-dressers, and he, and his subject, allowed us to shoot them at work. All day I was struck by how lucky it is that I work in documentary, in part because it gives me such access to ordinary people and their lives. Mr Santiago literally unveiled before our eyes, as, over the course of hours, he applied his impeccable make-up. He arrived as one person, and became another. It was extraordinary – such a gift.
